Muldoon Park

Mid 1970's

Name of Ski Area: Muldoon Park
Location: East Anchorage
Type of Area: Cross Country Ski Trails
Dates of Operation: Mid 1970's
Who Built It?: Municipality of Anchorage, Parks and Recreation Department
Elevation:

Low: ~250' / High: ~300'

Facilities: Four kilometers of cross country skiing trails.
Miscellaneous: The eastern section of this park has a fitness course that follows the old ski trails.  A paved bike trail follows some of the northern ski trail sections.  The trails that ran through the southwest section of this park have mostly disappeared.  Though a small and inconspicuous Anchorage city park, this area has some nice terrain that would have made fun classic skiing in the wooden and early fiberglass ski days.

Research Correspondence
[Tim Kelley - 18 November 2005]

I recently found the trails map shown above in a pile of scrapbook stuff I saved from a 1978 trip to Anchorage for the US National Cross Country Skiing Championships.  I am unaware that ski trails were ever groomed in Muldoon Park during the 25 or so years I've lived in Anchorage.  So these trails were likely cut, and then groomed for only a few years, in the mid 1970's.  Hopefully time will fill in more info on these forgotten city ski trails.

[John McCleary, MOA Parks and Recreation - December 02, 2005 email]

The trail system in Muldoon Park is currently limited to the two trail loops and a variety of social trails.  To my knowledge, the MOA (established in 1975-76) never had set track / packed the trails but the Anchorage Borough who was responsible for the park prior to unification may have.

[Sean Grady - October 14, 2015 email]

Just back from an after work jog at Muldoon Park, and I decided to GPS the existing fitness trail, and overlay the old trail map on the satellite image to see if there was any overlap. Doesn’t appear so. I’m sure the old image was just a hand drawn, general representation, so some of it might be closer in reality. My scaling of the old map might be off as well. Either way, the current trails skip over more than half of the park. Anyway, just figured I would send it along in case the composite map was of any interest.

Do you have further information, stories or pictures that you would like to contribute about this ski area?
