Research Correspondence

[Charlie Sherman - excerpt from 21 and 22 September 2008 emails]

I got my first pair of Skis the Christmas of 1952 from my folks.  We lived at the top of Government Hill in  those days.  Mom suggested I strap them on and ski over
to the hill behind the Curling Rink at the top of Govt Hill and "let er Fly".  I think it was soon after that I got a few lessons from, I want say, Sven Olsen, who was
a champion skier Olympic I think. That was the end of my lessons till I joined the Denali Ski Patrol in the 60's.I had to learn better techniques or kill myself. We
patrolled Arctic Valley and Alyeska when it opened.

To answer your question about who skied Govt Hill, as far as I know it was the neighborhood kids mainly. We always had to hike back up so we must have been in good shape!
